Alkaline water – claimed benefits & what science says
What it is:
Alkaline water has a higher pH (usually 8–9.5) than normal drinking water (around 7).
Commonly claimed benefits
Reduces acidity / heartburn:
Some small studies suggest it may temporarily neutralize stomach acid, which can help with acid reflux in some people.
Better hydration (claimed):
Marketers say it hydrates better, but good evidence is lacking. Plain water hydrates just as well for most people.
Antioxidant effects (claimed):
Ionized alkaline water is said to reduce oxidative stress, but strong human evidence is limited.
Bone health (claimed):
Older theories suggested it reduces calcium loss, but current evidence does not show clear bone benefits.
General wellness:
Some people report feeling better, but this is mostly anecdotal.
